Since Sioux Rural
Water System, Inc. began in 1972 we have taken on a number of projects to upgrade our
rural water system. Listed below are just a few steps that we have taken to improve
our rural water system since we began.

 | 1979 User Add-on Project:
 | Once the original rural water
system was built a number of people wanted to join the system so money was acquired to add
a few hundred new users.
|
|
 | 1983 Water
Source:
 | A
new water source was needed in Division II, so after a year of research a new well, pump
station, & aquastore were put West of Castlewood. Also, 12 1/2 miles of main
line were added & the Town of Hayti was also added on at that time.
|
|
 | 1988 Phase 1 Construction:
 | Prior to 1988 we decided that the water quality was
deteriorating and that the system had out grown some of the original design. The
construction of 8 1/2 miles of main line, a aquastore, a new well at Castlewood &
piping was upgraded at the Sioux Plant.
|
|
 | 1990 Phase II Construction:
 | Following
Phase 1 began Phase II which was the construction of 2 water treatment plants, 20 miles of
main line & the City of Castlewood was added as a stand-by user. The treatment
plants are located at the Castlewood well site and the other located at the Sioux Office
well site. After construction was completed the water quality problems were then
resolved.
|
|
 | 1991 User
Add-on (Phase III):
 | In 1990 about 100 people expressed their need and that
they would like to become a user due to lack of water or poor water quality. By the
time we had completed this project there was a total of 130 new users added to our rural
water system.
|
|
 | 1996 Well Relocation/System Upgrade:
 | Due to the increasing Nitrate contamination we decided to
look for a safer and a better water source. After a year long search we purchased 60
acres of land around our existing wells located by Castlewood (Division II). This,
along with the help of surrounding land owners, we have created a wellhead protection area
of our own.
|
 | Since
we have taken on this project we felt it was time to upgrade the old 1974 controls &
bring our system into the 20th century. Since the completion of this
project we now have a computerized SCADA system that can be ran from virtually anywhere in
the world!
|
1999-2000 User Add-on Project:
 |
After constant inquiry about bringing rural water to
different areas throughout the system we took on this project. This
project brought rural water to around 150 new consumers and to the City of
Estelline. We were awarded a $150,000 grant from Consolidated (DENR)
and we were awarded $350,000 from Community Development Block Grant.
The rest was financed through Rural Development Loan. By the end of
this project we did bring more than 150 people quality water.
